Celebrating The Second Anniversary of Maverick Excel

It’s another anniversary again and I am super excited to share with you, my story of self-discovery, hustle, grind, and an undying hope.

A journey of discovering my purpose and chasing my dreams in spite of all odds.

I have shared my story over and over again on this blog, other blogs and on my social media channels.

So, I won’t bore you with my story again.

After sharing the story of my first anniversary, it was a turning point in my life and business.

My influence and visibility online increased.

That’s the power of sharing your story.

In this second anniversary, I’m not going to share much, not because a lot has not happened to me and my business but I want to keep it short, simple and clear.

On Traffic

According to Google Analytics, my traffic this year has reduced drastically compared to last year where I recorded about 40k monthly visitors.

That period I was not really clear about my audience. I was targeting the whole world which was not a good thing.

Remember, “if you’re selling to everybody, you’re selling to nobody”

So, what I did was to get clear on who I wanted to target and started targeting those people.

Hence, my traffic was reduced but more targeted.

This has attracted more advertisers and business opportunities.

There was a time someone said something really nasty on Facebook about my blog and (dare) tag me to it.

He said he doesn’t understand my blog again whether it’s about entrepreneurship, storytelling, writing, tutorial or what.

I wanted to say something really nasty too but I came across a post which said:

“Do not stop changing your BUSINESS with TIME; else you might LOOSE against TIME!”

And again I remembered a line from a book I read by Abraham Ologundudu, Lead Your Life, which says that “Clarity is a process”.

This means that when you’re starting a business or whatever, you may not get the whole picture of it on the first day but as you grow you gain more clarity and know what to do or what not to do.

The contents published on my blog are mostly based on what my readers want.

I look at my Google Analytics like every day. I look at what type of content is driving most of the traffic and focus on them.

My readers would not be searching “business/entrepreneurship” and I would be busy writing about “BMW cars”

Business is about evolving, learning and sticking to what works.

Since I am getting clarity on what my audience want every day, I make sure I give them what matters to them.

Getting loads of traffic is good but make sure that that traffic is targeted and contain your ideal clients.


On Income

Three months after my first anniversary, I quit my day job as a classroom teacher to run my online business full time.

My first anniversary was around 4th March, 2016 and I quit my job 2nd June, 2016.

My online business was now demanding. At that time I was offering only writing services.

So, I had lots of clients to work with. Well, I could still manage my online business with my day job but I quit because my boss was taking advantage of me and also underpaying me.

Although I was scared of what will become of me, I had no choice but to do it afraid.

Business was going fine and I was doing well in the first three months but things went bad after that.

Most of my clients stopped giving me jobs. Those who requested for my service wanted to pay me peanuts which of course I declined.

The journey was now tough. I was just floating.

My mum, friends and well-wishers were advising me to go get a job.

I refused to listen to them.

At this moment, I was learning, unlearning and relearning.

I was studying successful entrepreneurs like Ramit Sethi, Neil Patel, Seth Godin, Jeff Goins, Pat Flynn, Yaro Starak, Victor Ekpo Bassey, Nzimora Ronald etc, to know what they were doing and how they were doing it to grow their income, influence, and visibility.

That prompted me to step up my game and I started creating multiple streams of income for myself.

So far, my monthly income has increased by 100% compared to when I started.


On products and services

When I started, I was not really sure of what my audience wanted, so I didn’t know what to sell to them.

Hence, I started with selling my writing skills.

I was making lots of money from writing.

After most of my clients stopped giving me jobs, I decided to look for other ways to make money from my blog.

And that prompted me to host my first ever paid webinar. The response was not too bad since that was my first time to ever selling something to my audience.

I think about 10 people attended the webinar.

Hosting that webinar gave me some kind of guts which has led to me hosting two more paid webinars.

Ok down below, you can see all the products and services that have helped me generate revenue from this blog.

The writing services which I offer generate more income for me from this blog. I would say about 60% of my income comes from writing.

I just added the consultation service recently. I got two clients from it already. Thanks to Victor Ekpo Bassey. A video I watched on The Highly Paid Expert Network prompted me to setup that consultation page and it has been a life saver. ( I couldn’t find the link to the video. Join the group and your life and business will practically change)

Blog setup service is a service I just got serious with recently. Before now I was combining my coaching program with blog setup service for a very low fee.

And guess what?

I was attracting only low paying clients who would spend 3-4 hours negotiating with me. Since I stepped up my game and added structure to my blog setup service, I started attracting serious minded clients.

So now, my blog setup service and blog coaching program are two different services I offer.

The Guest Post Your Way To Online Visibility and Influence, was my first ever product. I created the product after a webinar I hosted with the same title.

A friend encouraged me to create it for those who were not able to attend the webinar.

So far, I’ve sold over 20 copies. I know that doesn’t sound remarkable but it’s something.

I intend creating more products in the nearest future for my audience to help them grow their online business.


On Events and Webinars

I have hosted two paid webinars so far.

The first webinar was Guest Post Master Class: Become Popular Over Night With Guest Posting. The second one which I concluded just recently was Make A Living Writing: How To Make 6 Figure Income Monthly From Freelance Writing.

I won’t be hosting any webinar anytime soon. I’ll just focus on creating more products. This is because Nigerians are yet to understand and appreciate the whole webinar thing, especially when it is a paid webinar.

Challenges

Most of the challenges I had last year like poor power supply, high cost of internet connection, etc have been fixed.

Righ now, my number one challenge is low paying clients. For some weird reasons I don’t know most of the people who contact me to work with me are people who want to pay peanut.

Oh well, I am working on that. I spoke with a business coach the other and he told me what I needed to do to attract high paying clients.


I don’t want this report to be too long that’s why I am not going into details.

I am happy for the growth I’ve recorded so far. It has not been easy but it has been worth all the hustle, grind, sleepless night and frustration.

I am not where I wished to be yet but I am not where I was two years ago. I’ve been exposed to lots of things and people.

I have associated with People who I wouldn’t have if I didn’t start this journey.

I’m happy for the number of people who love and believe in me.

Time and chance fail me to include all the testimonials I receive from clients, friends, blog readers and social media followers.

Those testimonials are indications that I am doing something worthwhile.

if you’re scared of starting an online business or launching your book, project or whatever, I will encourage you to JUST start.

Don’t wait until you have it all figured out. Clarity is a process.

Start with what you have because what you have is enough.

Don’t wait to get validation from friends and family. Don’t wait for the right time because no time is ever right.

I am where I am today because I started somewhere.
