Just like a dream, the year 2016 came and went with its victory, failure, joy, pains, setback and all.
There are few people who would say that they achieved their set goals for 2016. While there are lots of people who barely did anything tangible.
Well, that last year was bad for you does not mean that we should all tear our clothes and cover our faces in shame.
That you’re still alive means that there are lots of things you could still achieve.
The year 2017 is right here before us and we can’t afford to sit and watch life happen to us. Could we?
What I like about the New Year is that it is usually filled with new hopes, dreams, aspirations and expectations.
For some people who have failed in life, they usually see the New Year as a good time to start again.
It is typical for people to set new goals, new resolutions, new dreams and aspirations.
To achieve your goals this year, there are certain principles you should follow to make you achieve your goals faster.
You are not to follow all the principles.
Just take the one that makes sense and resonates with you and run with it.
The first step to achieveing your goals this year is to believe in them. Whitney Houston said in one of her songs, “who knows what miracle you could achieve if you believe”?
Whitney Houston said in one of her songs, “who knows what miracle you could achieve if you believe”?
Believing in your goals, gives you the energy needed to work towards achieving it.
Whether your goal is to make your first million naira or to get your first 100 clients or perhaps it is to learn a complicated graphic software, you’ve got to believe that you can achieve anything you set your mind to do.
Believing in your dreams gives you the strenght and faith to go on despite any obstacles along the way.
Forget about how bad last year was or how big your goal for 2017 is, just believe you can achieve that thing.
“Great things happen to those who don’t stop believing, trying, learning, and being grateful.”
― Roy T. Bennett,
#2. Take Action
Believing in your dreams and goals is not enough to achieve them, you have to take action.
It is only action that will bring those things you desire to reality.
“It’s the action, not the fruit of the action, that’s important. You have to do the right thing. It may not be in your power, may not be in your time, that there’ll be any fruit. But that doesn’t mean you stop doing the right thing. You may never know what results come from your action. But if you do nothing, there will be no result.”
― Mahatma Gandhi
Stop talking about doing this and that, going here and there.
Don’t go to the social media to blow your trumpet. Simply do that thing you’ve planned to do.
#3. Plan for the Future
I know that planning for a thing is not bread and butter for some people.
But it’s really important you strategically plan out your goals.
It will be difficult to achieve your goals if you don’t plan for it. You want to make your first million naira? But do you do that?
Without a coherent plan, you are only wishing.
Lack of planning causes lack of direction which leads to lack of motivation and procrastination.
Planning is not dificult as you may think. It is simple as knowing the HOW of achieving your goals.
You want to learn how to code? Ask yourself: Can I afford to pay a professional to teach me? Where do I get the best hand to teach me? Should I learn coding using free online tutorials? What are the core concepts I need to understand in coding? etc.
Can I afford to pay a professional to teach me?
Where do I get the best hand to teach me?
Should I learn coding using free online tutorials?
What are the core concepts I need to understand in coding? etc.
When you ask yourself these questions, it helps you make plans for your goals.
#4. Let go of the past
When 2016 came, you had great and lofty goals to attain. But somehow, things didn’t work out as you planned.
I understand how it feels. One of your goals last year was probably to build a successful business but due to some circumstances beyond your power, you couldn’t achieve it.
Simply let go of the past. You have no control about what happened yesterday but you can control today.
“The truth is, unless you let go, unless you forgive yourself, unless you forgive the situation, unless you realize that the situation is over, you cannot move forward.”
― Steve Maraboli,
Letting it go of the past, helps you move forward faster in achieving your goals.
In the world of social media and internet of things, it is very easy for anyone to get distracted.
Wherever you turn, people are screaming “buy this” “take this” “do this”.
And if you don’t know what you want in life, you will run after every shiny armour presented to you.
Personally, I have decided to focus more on those things that are important to me. Whatever will not help me achieve my goal for 2017 does not deserve my attention.
The mistake a lot of people make is having a list of 100 goals they must achieve in a year.
Have just one or two major goals and channel all your energy to it..
Let your focus be turned to an obsession. Let everything you say and do, be about that one goal.
This way, it will help you achieve your goals faster and then you can move to another.
Clustering your mind with lots of goals leads to confusion and procrastination.
If you want to write a book, be focused.
You want to start a blog, be focused.
You want to learn programming, be focused.
#6. Learn New Things
The world we are in is always evolving. New things pop up from here and there.
You’d be obsolete if you still hold on to the old ways of doing things.
There are free tutorials on Youtube on how to do anything you could ever imagined.
My best friend, Deon, learned how to code with his small cell phone and today, he is extremely good at what he does.
You’ve got no excuse for being ignorant.
Don’t be OK with the status quo. Learn new things.
Know how stuffs work.
If you already have a skill, make sure you’re up to date with the industry stndard. What worked yesterday may not work again today.
With the internet, you don’t need to spend heavily on learning something new.
#7. Build Relationships
What money cannot but, relationship can. In life, the relationship you have with people is priceless.
You know, no man is an Island.
No matter how knowledgeable you are, you will need the help of others.
The most successful people in the world leverage on their relationship with others.
To achieve your goals you need like-minded people who understand where you’re going to and offer genuine support to help you.
Anybody who is not helping you in anyway to ahieve your dreams is not fit to be in your life.
Go after real connection and relationship with people.
They say that your net worth is determined by your network.
Cut away from anyone who is not adding value to your life.
#8. Be Open To New Opportunities
In life, opportunities always present themselves in the most unlikely way. And if you’re not sensitive to it, you miss it.
There are people who when they see opportunities they close their minds to it.
That is not supposed to be.
You have to open your mind to new opportunities this new year if you want to achieve your goals faster.
Most times, opportunities will not just come to you in a platter of gold. You need to chase it and intentionally seek out for it.
#9. Get Mentors
Life is too short to make all the mistake in the world. Look out for experts who have achieved the kind of results you admire and pay them to teach you.
This year is not the time to look for free things.
If you want to learn a thing, pay others who know about it and learn from them.
Rather than spend six hours on Google to figure out how to do a thing, you could pay an expert to show you in less than an hour.
No matter how much you plan for the year, things may still go wrong.
You may buy all the courses from experts, attend all the seminars, watch all the videos and read all the books and yet might find it difficult to achieve your goals.
Things will go wrong.
Your best effort may not yield the kind of result you desire.
At this point, you should persevere.
Understand that bad days will always come but your ability to persevere will keep you going.
No matter how long you fight, it is he who puts in an extra effort that wins.
No matter how far you’ve gone in life, it is he who moves one more step farther that reaches his destination.
Everyone is fighting a battle but the one who throws one more blow turns out to be the winner.
Talent will fail.
Education will fail.
But persistence eventually wins the game.
Resolve to stay longer and persevere until your achieve your goals.
This year has just begun, make sure you make the best use of the year.
Don’t run around chasing the wind.
Know what you want and go after it
Have a prosperous New Year
